Hijab-wearing Syrian refugee girl assaulted in US school

WASHINGTON: A Hijab-wearing Syrian refugee girl was assaulted in a US school.

The Muslim teen refugee was beaten up so severely that the girl required treatment at a hospital for a concussion.

The video of the incident went viral. The video showed the hijab-wearing teen come out of the bathroom stall at Chartiers Valley High School. The school is located just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

A girl in a purple shirt confronted the refugee girl. The girl was trying to use at stall an electronic cigarette.

The hijab-wearing girl was pushed and beaten as the altercation turned violent. After trying to fight back, she is pushed to the ground by the other girl and beaten.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, termed the incident a hate crime. The organization demanded an investigation into the incident.

The victim girl’s family is being extended legal help by the CAIR.

Zohra Lasania, program director at CAIR-Pittsburg, said that after this video she was beaten up some more, and she had to go to the hospital

She said that the refugee girl is at her home and is recovering.

The girl family fled the civil war in Syria and stayed in a refugee camp for two years.

Later, the family was allowed to enter into the United States.

“They were fleeing anarchy, violence, and the complete breakdown of the social system, a governing system so they came to a civilized place and we all assured them this is the most civilized place in the world,” Safdar Khwaja, president of CAIR-Pittsburg, told local media. “To see this kind of violence take place, it’s very disappointing.”

Police are investigating the incident but a law enforcement official said the incident does not appear to be religiously or racially motivated.

CAIR noted otherwise and reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting Muslim-Americans, immigrants and other minority groups since US President Donald Trump took office.
