Mohammad Amir seeks legal advice over England visa hurdle

LAHORE: Pakistan’s premier fast bowler Muhammad Amir could be denied England visa for upcoming tour  in July this year over his confession for spot fixing.

Amir has contacted his lawyers to consult possible hurdles he may face when apply for England visa.

Earlier, Muhammad Amir was sentenced to six-month jail in a young offenders’ institute in 2011 after found guilty to corruption charges for his role in spot fixing during the Lord’s Test of 2010.

In addition, Amir has faced at least five years punishment to remain away from cricket after being found guilty in Spot fixing.

In a section relating to refusing visas, the UK Home Office website states: “If a person has been sentenced to a period of between 12 months and less than 4 years imprisonment, the ECO [Entry Clearance Officer] must refuse the application until 10 years has passed since the end of the sentence.

England immigrant officer will investigate the procedure of visa for Muhammad Amir. Cricinfo reported ‘if anyone punished for one to four years in British then visa clearance officer in England have an authority to reject visa of punished person for ten years.

Amir was not deported from Britain at the end of his sentence, which should help his case. Salman Butt, his captain, was deported from Britain when he was released early from his 30-month prison term, which is likely to prevent him from being able to gain a British visa for ten years, ruining any hope of a recall for this summer’s Test series in England, Telegraph reported.

Green shirts are to play four Test matches, six one-dayers and only T20 international in their upcoming England tour, commencing from July 14.

It is pertinent to mention here that Muhammad Amir faced hurdles last year for getting visa to New Zealand but later on he was allowed to visit New Zealand.
