Mathews preferred to bowl first after winning the toss and just got the start he would have wanted.
His premier bowler Rangana Herath removed Alex Hales on just 4 in his first over, but Roy and Root gave it a cushion to take the score to 65 in 11th over, when Root (25) left the crease.
Buttler joined Roy in, and the pair ket scoring runs when Roy (42) too left the crease on the total of 88.
Morgan started where Roy had left it and score 18 valuable runs in 16th over.
This was when momentum had changed totally to England’s favour. Buttler and Morgan began to score runs at a brisk pace and from 110/3 in 15, took the score to 165 in 19.5 and with Stokes’ last ball SIXER, ended at 171/4.
Sri Lanka in respond were off to a horrible start, losing FOUR top order batsmen within first 3 overs.
But, defending champions kept their proud and with Mathews captains knock of (73* off 54)), brought his team back in the game from 15-4 to 95-5 in 13th over, along with Kapugedera (30).
Parera, coming in at 7th, played his little cameo of (20 off 11) t take the score to 138/6 on his departure.
But, this wicket had given England a hope that they can win it then.
Some excellent death bowling by Jordan, removing Shanaka and Herat in same over, dashed Sri Lanka’s hopes to the ground.
Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews was deserted when he could not score 15 runs off the last over, disappointment was all over him, the pain of losing game and being out of the tournament but he had won so many hearts there.
