Punjab opposition parties demand Army deployment during LB polls

LAHORE: Opposition parties of Punjab have once again stood against the ruling government and demanded Army deployment during local bodies’ elections in the province.

The opposition parties showed their reservations and stated that they would approach court if the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) fails to address their demand.

Meanwhile, preparation for LB polls is on peak as more than 45 million ballot papers have been printed for the first phase of local bodies’ election due on October 31 in Punjab and Sindh.

According to ECP, process of printing the ballot papers has been concluded.

Approximately 47.3 million ballot papers have been printed in which 35.740 million papers are for Punjab and more than 11.5 million for Sindh.

Besides this the ballot papers have been dispatched to the returning officers (ROs) and will be handed over to the relevant staff at polling stations on October 30.

In the first phase, the electoral exercise will be held in 12 districts of the Punjab.

Polling for the second phase will be arranged on November 19 this year in Khanewal, Sahiwal, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot, Sargodha, Mianwali, Sheikhupura, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, M.B.Din, Attock and Jhelum districts.

Moreover, the third phase will commence on December 5 in Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rajan Pur, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, Rawalpindi, Muzaffargarh, Narowal, Jhang and Khoshab.

Various religious parties had requested change in the date since Imam Hussain’s (RA) ‘Chehlum’ is going to be held on December 3.
