Nepra stops K-Electric from collecting Rs8 as bank charges from consumers

KARACHI: National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Friday restrained K-Electric from charging Rs8 per consumer as bank charge, directing the power utility to return the amount so far it charged from the consumer.

The authority said that that power utility on the basis of misstated fact got the bank charged approved from the regulatory authority.

It directed the power utility to estimate the collection under the head of bank charges and return the amount back to the consumers.

It said that the authority received many complaints in 2013 against collection of bank charges from the consumers.

K-electric has been  making a buck by collecting over Rs 250 million per years from its consumers, as the utility was charging Rs 8 from every consumer on account of bank charges every month.

The utility was charging the bank collection charges from the consumer despite the fact that State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) had restricted all the banks from collecting bank charges from consumers of public utilities.
