TEHRAN: Iran held a funeral for a senior Revolutionary Guard commander, Brig. Gen. Hamid Taqavi, on Monday who was killed while battling against the Sunni-led Islamic State militant group in Iraq, foreign news agency reported.
Funeral prayers of the high-ranked Iranian officer, Brig. Gen. Hamid Taqavi, was attended by a hundreds of nationals in Tehran’s Guard compound while he would be buried in his hometown Ahvaz on Tuesday (tomorrow), state television said.
According to reports, Taqavi was killed ‘during a advisory mission’ in Samarra town located in Baghdad where a major Shiite shrine also situated.
Taqavi was the highest ranking Iranian commander as far who was killed since the 1980’s Iran-Iraq war.
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, announced on Fars news agency that the commander had died defending Iran from extremists.
Shamkhani termed Taqavi a ‘matryr’ who died while defending his country from extremism. The deceased commander was a veteran Guard member who had close contacts with the Iraqi armed opposition during rulership of Saddam Hussein.

It should be mentioned here that predominantly Shiite Iran admitted to send military advisers to assist Syria and Iraq in battling Sunni-led rebels and extremist groups, but completely denied sending combat forces.
