GLASGOW: Several people were reportedly killed while others sustained serious injuries following an apparent accident in Glasgow when a trash lorry crashed into Christmas shoppers in the city centre on Monday.
The incident took place at the Scottish city’s main shopping hub, Queen Street near George Square, which was filled with shoppers just three days before Christmas.
According to UK media report, police confirmed deaths of at least six persons in the terrible accident. However, official statement of the casualties is yet to be released.
The lorry which reportedly lost control before hitting pedestrians walking outside the Gallery of Modern Art; killing and injuring several persons in Glasgow – Scotland, the third largest in the United Kingdom.
Police spokesman told AFP that the incident took place near the Gallery of Modern Art where a rubbish truck hit a passerby and then crushed several others over a distance of around 300 metres (984 feet).
An eyewitness told foreign media that the lorry had lost its control before occurrence of serious incident.
Foreign media expressed suspicions for the recent incident that could have connection with France ‘accident’ where a driver collided into pedestrians, injuring 11 and shouting “Allahu Akbar”, meaning God is greatest in Arabic.
Scottish police spokesman said that it was road traffic collision with multiple fatalities. He rejected to consider the incident as terrorism or criminal attempt.
He said that the lorry driver was under treatment in hospital. Some local media reports claimed that the driver may have suffered a heart attack.
Prime Minister David Cameron has been briefed about the major incident.
