Phillip Hughes passes away in hospital

SYDNEY: Australia’s star batsman Phillip Hughes has died in hospital two days after he was struck in his head, local newspapers reported on Thursday.

Hughes was playing for South Australia in a domestic match against New South Wales when he miss-judged a bouncer bowled by Sean Abbott and got hit on the back of his head.

He fell unconscious and was shifted to hospital on life support and immediacy underwent a surgery. He remained in coma for two days, but could  not survive.

Cricket Australia said in a statement on Thursday afternoon that Hughes had died. “He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday,” the statement said.

He represented Australia in 25 One Day Internationals (ODI), 26 Tests and one Twenty 20 International.

Main cause of injury:

Hughes was using Masuri-manufactured helmet but it was of the older version which doesn’t have the protection on the back of the head.

Unlike the new model which has a grill protection on it, the one Hughes was using did not have protection.
