Punjab govt, ECP reply summoned over LB polls delay

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) directed Punjab government and Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to submit reply till December 16 to elaborate reasons for not holding local bodies election in Punjab.

Justice Shazadah Mazhar conducted hearing on the plea on Tuesday. The petition has been filed by local citizen Rizwan Gull, in which the petitioner said that one year before Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered Punjab government for holding the local body elections in the province despite of that Punjab government does not conduct the elections.

The petitioner said that it is compulsory to hold local bodies elections according to article 132 and 140-A of the constitution, adding that the constitutional crises is being create by not holding LB polls in province.

The petitioner further said that government becomes an obstacle in the way of giving rights to the public. The petitioner has requested the court to order Punjab government for holding LB elections soon.

The court has issued notices to Punjab government and Election Commission of Pakistan and directed them to submit their replies till December 16.  The court said the reasons for not holding LB polls in province should be informed.
