Bhagwandas emerges as front runner for CEC

ISLAMABAD: As the government and opposition have geared up efforts to reach consensus regarding appointment of Chief Election Commissioner, former justice Rana Bhagwandas has emerged as front runner for the coveted constitutional post, which is vacant since the resignation of former CEC justice Fakhrudddin G Ebrahim last year.

As the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah has already proposed Bhagwandas’ name among others for appointment as CEC, sources told TheNewsTribe.com that the government was also mulling over the option to put its weight behind the former judge of the apex court of the country, who hailed from the minority Hindu community.

Those whose name have been proposed included former chief justices Tasaduq Hussain Jillani, Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui, Ajmal Mian, former justices Tariq Pervez, Nasir Aslam Zahid and others.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamaat-e-Islami have put their weights behind Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid for the top slot of Election Commission of Pakistan, while PPP, National Party and other groups are supporting Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, besdies Baghwandas.

Meanwhile, a private TV channel reported that Opposition Leader Khurshid Shah had sent PPP’s senior parliamentarian Mian Raza Rabnbani to persuade Baghwandas to accept the responsibility.

It is to be mentioned here that Supreme Court had set Nov 13 deadline for Prime Minister and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly to appoint a permanent CEC, otherwise the court will withdraw its judge, currently serving as Acting Chief Election Commissioner.
