ECP to preserve May 2013 election record for five years

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to preserve all election record and material of last general election May 2013 for five years.

The ECP has decided this in the wake of some political quarters demands to investigate alleged rigging in the elections.

As per law, election record can be destroyed after one year if there is no election complaint.

ECP sources said that as per 1976 Public Representative Act’s section 44, election material can be destroyed after one year. However, those electoral constituencies’ record has to be maintained whose complaints are being heard in election tribunals.

As some political parties have been alleging rigging in the elections, a judicial commission is likely to be constituted to probe rigging. Hence, the ECP has decided to preserve all election material, including ballot papers, counter files, farm number 15.
