SRINAGAR: In occupied Kashmir, complete shutdown was observed on Wednesday to mark the martyrdom anniversaries of prominent liberation leaders, Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone, and martyrs of Hawal.
Call for the shutdown and a march towards Eidgah in Srinagar was given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
In a bid to foil the Eidgah march, the occupation authorities had placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and other Hurriyet leaders including Maulana Abbas Ansari, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Zafar Akbar Butt, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Masroor Abbas, Shahid-ul-Islam and Syed Saleem Gilani under house arrest.
The puppet authorities had also imposed strict restrictions in Srinagar city to prevent people from conducting the march while all roads leading to the Eidgah had been sealed.
It was on 21st May in 1990 when unidentified gunmen killed Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq at his residence in Srinagar. More than 60 mourners were martyred in Hawal area of the city when Indian troops fired upon his funeral procession. On the same day, in 2002, Khawaja Abdul Ghani Lone was assassinated by unknown assailants when he was returning from Eidgah after addressing a public gathering.
Meanwhile, APHC spokesman in a statement strongly condemned the crackdown on Hurriyet leaders and activists including Mushtaq Ahmed Sofi in view of the Eidgah Chalo programme. He also denounced police raids on the houses of APHC leaders, Javed Ahmad Mir, Hilal Ahmad War and other Hurriyet activists.
