Twelve years ago on 27th April, Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar became the first man to break the 100mph barrier in world cricket.
The Pakistani bowler was measured bowling to Craig McMillan at 100.04 mph (161kph) during a one-day international against New Zealand in Lahore.
While the sad fact is that theĀ record remained unofficial – the ICC refused to sanction it as it did not have a standard measuring tool. The previous fastest recorded speed was 99.8mph by Australia’s Jeff Thomson in 1975, although that did not take place during a match.
Still, the highest electronically measured speed for a ball bowled by any bowler is 161.3 km/h (100.23 mph) by Shoaib Akhtar (Pakistan) against England on 22 February 2003 in a World Cup match at Newlands, Cape Town, South Africa.
