ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan’s upper house on Monday passed a resolution unanimously comprising of demands from government for development steps for Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
The demands include for preparation and making of a public and a workable plan for FATA to cleanse it of militant network, provide compensation to the victims of militancy, relief and rehabilitation of IDPs and a massive programme for the socio-economic uplift of the people.
The resolution was moved by Afrasiab Khattak and Farhatullah Babar.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for States and Frontier Regions, general (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch said that the government is committed to bring peace in the country without bloodshed and all possible measures are being taken in this regard.
He said the government has started dialogue with Taliban with a view to bring peace and this process will not be dragged for long period. He said the government wants to resolve the issue in peaceful manner but under the need the option of operation cannot be ruled out.
The Minister said that about six thousand people have been martyred due to militancy in FATA and about same number injured in the area. He said four billion rupees have been paid to the victims of terrorism as compensation and two billion rupees more will be paid in near future.
Abdul Qadir Baloch said about one hundred thousand Internally Displaced Persons are living in camps while others are residing in settled areas with their relatives.
He said twenty five thousand rupees are being paid to each IDP family but government is also considering to increase the package.
The Minister said a plan is under consideration for the socio-economic development of FATA and this will be presented in the House shortly. He said after the approval it will be implemented in FATA.
Meanwhile the Senate passed another resolution unanimously recommending the government to take steps to tender the contract of Reko Diq mines in Balochistan in a transparent manner. The resolution was moved by Hafiz Hamdullah.
Through another resolution, the house recommended to the government to take immediate steps to provide clean drinking water to the people in Islamabad Capital Territory. The resolution was moved by Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi.
Briefly speaking on the occasion, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervez Rashid said that there are 133 villages in the capital territory and out of these 65 are provided with the water supply schemes.
He said fifty five of these schemes are functioning properly while ten are non functional due to different reasons including lack of electricity, local community disputes and reduction in underground water table. Two bills were introduced in the House on Monday.
The National Cyber Security Council Bill, 2014 was introduced by Mushahid Hussain Syed. It provides for the establishment of a National Cyber Security Council.
The Financial Institutions (Recovery of Finances) (Amendment) Bill 2014) was moved by Mian Raza Rabbani. It provides to amend the Financial Institutions (Recovery of Finances) Ordinance, 2001. The Chair referred the Bills to the concerned Standing Committees of the House.
