KARACHI: Senior PPP leader Taj Haider, who was tasked with the supervision of relief operation in drought-hit Tharparkar district, confirmed on Saturday that 201 people had died in the impoverished desert region.
Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Haider said that 51 men, 34 women and children were among the dead.
“Severe cold and drought led to so many deaths in Thar,” he said.
Haider thanked the governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab for dispatching relief goods to the drought-stricken Sindh district.
About the relief efforts, he said that 275, 000 families have been provided with free wheat, covering 80 percent of the population.
Answering a question, he admitted that rescue teams were yet to reach some far-flung areas of the region.
