ALIGARH: Muslims of India should participate “wholeheartedly” in the electoral process and support the best candidates, eminent Islamic scholar and President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi said on Sunday.
More than 800 million voters of India go to poll in April and May. The parliament elections in world’s largest democracy will begin on April 7 and continue on nine separate dates until May 12.
“All that I can say is that Muslims should participate wholeheartedly in the electoral process. They should support the best candidates and hope for the best. They will suffer if they remain aloof from the political system,” Nadwi, who is also Chief Rector of the Nadwatul Ulama Darul Uloom.
Maulana said the community members should now reach out to others and win over their hearts through message of ‘human brotherhood.’ “Muslims should articulate their demands before the Government of the day but they should not be totally dependent on the state for the fulfillment of their needs,” he added.
“Most well-to-do Muslim families do not bother to teach their children Urdu then how can they expect the state to shoulder the entire responsibility of promoting Urdu,” he said.
There are about 200 million Muslims in India and they represent the largest minority in the country with a population of 1.2 billion.
