Corey Anderson, New Zealand batsman, has made the fastest century in the history of one-day international cricket. He reached 100 runs in just 36 balls while playing against West Indies in Queenstown today.
However, the record might not be counted as this ODI, between New Zealand and West Indies, was shortened to 21 overs only due to rain. And record book requires the ODI match to be of at least 25 overs for anyone to enter it.
So there are fair chances that Shahid Afridi will retain his record of fastest century in just 37 balls, which he made against Sri Lanka in 1996 in Nairobi.
Anderson made 131 runs today with the help of 14 sixes and his strike rate was 278.72. New Zealand’s total score was 283/4 at the end of 21 overs.
But media has reported that Anderson has named the record of fastest century in ODIs. And he has even commented on his achievement.
Anderson said in an interview, “I guess it’s one of those things that you never really plan on doing when you go out there. But, obviously, a reduced game makes it a little bit easier to go harder at it early. Brendon showed his intent early on and Jesse played an unbelievable innings as well.”
And added, “I think we went pretty good together, I guess. I was hitting boundaries and he was hitting boundaries – it was just one of those things that comes off.”
So now let’s wait and watch! Whether Afridi still remains the fastest century maker or not.
