ISLAMABAD: The highest electoral board, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and the Standing Committee of Parliamentary Affairs in the National Assembly agreed for impossibleness of holding local bodies’ polls on the dates of January.
Once again the local bodies’ election is likely to be delayed after several combined efforts of the Supreme Court (SC) and ECP despite criticism of the provincial governments.
Mian Abdul Manan headed Standing Committee of Parliamentary Affairs reviewed the arrangements of LB election in the Punjab and Sindh provinces on January and agreed along with ECP for delaying the electoral event in light of facing different issues.
The ECP and committee provided its stance that the holding of LB polls in Sindh and Punjab on January 30 is impossible due to insufficient capacity of printing 300 million ballot papers as well as funds’ arrangement for purchasing at least 400,000 biometric machines.
ECP officials said that at least 4,000 appeals has been filed against the new delimitation in Sindh and Punjab provinces which also need to be resolved before the commencement of election.
In the high-level meeting, the standing committee with the affirmation of ECP suggested the provincial governments for seeking the SC’s direction for the delay in the electoral event till March.
