ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to shut down mobile across the country in a bid to keep peace on the religious event of Chehlum.
PTA issued formal directions to all cellular companies regarding the decision for assisting the law enforcement agencies in controlling law and order situation across the sensitive areas, sources said.
According to the directions, the cellular services would be closed across all the provinces from 8:00 am morning of December 24 (tomorrow) till 9:00 pm night.
PTA took the decision following request from local authorities wanting a peaceful situation during Chehlum mourning rallies while Sindh and Punjab provincial governments had sought the services’ closure orders from the Ministry of Interior.
Shutting down of cell phone service is tactic which was started by former Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik, who used to claim that it helps law enforcement agencies in keeping the peace.
