Parents tried their level best to save their 3 days old daughter, born after typhoon. They gave her oxygen with a hand held pump but all their effort went in vain as she died just after three days of birth.
Althea Mustacia also became victim of Typhoon Haiyan, which has already impacted whole Philippines, killing thousands of innocent people.
Althea’s mother gave her birth in Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center, a government run hospital. She was suffering from newborn asphyxia, a disease where newborn baby is not able to breathe normally. And it may lead to brain damage or even death.
Althea might have lived if hospital had functional ventilators, but there were no power supply in the region, so she was not given proper aid.
Her parents supplied oxygen with the help of hand held pump linked with an oxygen tank. They both did this for three days without stopping. Her lungs were not functioning but she had a working heart. After struggling for 3 days, her heart finally gave up and she died.
According to the Physician in charge, Dr Leslie Rosario, Althea’s parents took her body, wrapped in little blanket.
