NEW YORK: It is often seen that people post sexual photos of their ex lover once they get over with their relationship. Exposing ones personal photos with slang over internet for the purpose of cyber harm is a common practice now to take revenge from former soul mate.
University of Maryland law professor Danielle Citron told in her forthcoming book Hate 3.0 has brought to light a girl whose ex posted her ‘inappropriate’ personal photo over a porn website Private Voyeur with a cliché “Jap Slut”. Not only this, the ex boyfriend also gave her complete bio data including name, place of work and city she resides in. She came to know about it through a stranger and came to fear that her social circles would come to know and enquire about it.
Somebody even emailed her nude photos with complete details to her co-workers and boss which couldn’t have been any worse. Her name with humiliating captions was available on Google search engine and at last she became fed up of hide and seek game and thus resided on changing her name to Holly Jacobs. She also founded a website End Revenge Porn.
Jacobs also approached FBI and the local police to do something about getting her pictures and videos removed but nothing worked in her favor. In her website, she quotes:
“I know what it’s like to have to struggle with something like this alone, with no resources in place to help those that become victims. My goal is not only to institute formal laws that will help prevent revenge porn from occurring in the first place, but also to build a support system and community to help victims recover from the damage that it causes in their life. Please contact me below if you are interested in hearing more about this movement or becoming involved”.
The disclaimer page of her website page states “I am not an attorney. These are just steps that I have followed to get my photos removed. I have been successful getting my photos down with copyright infringement claims; hopefully, you will be successful with this, too. However, remember that the perpetrator can keep posting the photos to various sites, as in my case. That’s why it’s important for you to sign the petitions for amendment of cyberharassment laws”.
