New Dehli: External Affairs Minister of India, Salman Khurshid and Pakistan’s foreign policy adviser Sartaj Aziz would meet at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, India media reported on Thursday.
According to Indian media, India and Pakistan are working on a deal to silence the guns on the Line of Control. A meeting between External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s national security and foreign policy adviser Sartaj Aziz is on the cards on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, where Khurshid will be representing India.
The meeting in the Central Asian country is expected on September 13. Pakistan High Commissioner to India Salman Bashir confirmed that a deal to de-escalate tension on the LoC is in the works.
According to Indian media the exact nature of the mechanism is still in the works, it is believed that the existing mechanisms.
The thinking in South Block is that it may be time to look for more effective mechanisms in the foreign office, either at the level of the national security advisers or at the level of the Prime Minister’s Office, to ensure that incidents on the LoC do not flare up and lead to a conflict situation. Besides, these incidents also derail the dialogue process and erase even incremental gains in bilateral ties.
The deal, if it works out, is essentially aimed at showcasing some progress in a planned meeting between Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and Nawaz Sharif on September 29 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Tension between India and Pakistan peaked in 2013 following the beheading of an Indian soldier in January 2013. The transition to another civilian government in Pakistan, led by Nawaz Sharif, has not changed the situation.
