New York: Facebook has become a source of sharing ideas among the youth as well as the adults throughout the world
Users make use of this social networking tool for the purpose of playing games and interact with others, for the purpose of business and many others.
According to the social psychologists of Michigan University, the more the facebook is used, the more we feel depressed. The report by the psychologists suggests that 82 young adults expressed sadness after using their accounts over the period of two weeks.
The result was same when comparison of the individual’s average use. Social psychologist and lead study author Ethan Kross, at the Michigan University, “My hunch is that there are likely a variety of factors that may be driving this effect. Maybe when you’re looking at Facebook you’re engaging in a lot of social comparisons. Maybe when you’re on Facebook you’re not engaging in other kinds of activities that may be good for you, like getting outside, exercising and interacting with people in daily life”.
Even though facebook is a platform where the people keep themselves up to date from the recent updates but at the same time it may create an isolating effect among the users.
Previously, a research by Humboldt University’s Institute of Information Systems from Berlin stated, “People feel bad about themselves when they use facebook. A sense of comparison started to prevail among the peers which caused de-motivation. The lack of comments and likes from facebook friends are also reason for the users to feel demoralized.
Columbia University’s Keith Wilcox along with his team carried out five experiments and said, “Most people are presenting information about their actual selves on Facebook, but they are filtering it so they are only presenting the most positive information. “There are good benefits and bad benefits. Let’s face it, it makes you feel good about yourself, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But there is [also] a lot of boasting as a result”.
New York psychologist and author of Emotional First Aid Dr. Guy indicate, “It comes up in sessions all the time. Patients feel really bad: they went online and liked their friends’ vacation photos, but their friend didn’t like theirs. In the throes of a nasty breakup, their ex wrote something really bad about them and blasted it all over. I hear this literally all the time. People have huge emotional experiences on social media, especially Facebook, and they bring it into sessions.”
The director of Media Psychology Research Center Dr. Pamela Rutledge said, “I had gone in kind of critical, and I was totally humbled by the good will of these women. It allows people to connect with people who have shared interests. Especially those who are house-bound or have issues with social avoidance. There is a very large population of disabled people on Second Life. They are sharing with people who share their point of view”.
There are millions of people that make use of social media for the purpose of interacting with peers. Everything has positive and negative aspects throughout the world. It is just the way people make use of facebook in today’s world.
