GUYANA: Shahid Afridi’s brilliant batting and bowling performance led Pakistan to win first ODI by 126 runs against West Indies.
The all-rounder took seven wickets for just 12 runs in his nine overs and scored 76 runs while Mohammad Irfan grabbed two wickets for 17 runs.
Earlier, West Indies won the toss and put Pakistan into bat. Pakistan set 225 runs target against the hosts. Pakistan revamped their batting for this series, but there were some familiar sights after they were put in on a drizzly day in Providence: the top order keeled over at the slightest sight of movement, Misbah-ul-Haq again played a hold-it-together innings scoring at a slow rate that riled Pakistan fans, and Shahid Afridi again showed his penchant for the big moment with a innings-transforming 76 in his comeback game to set West Indies a tricky target.
Replying to this, West Indies were all out for 98 runs.

“I try hard and I back myself and I want to thank people back home,” says Shahid Afridi, the Man of the Match. “It is not time for me to just survive in the team, but to give a lot to the team. It was not easy to survive so I tried to stay positive. Whenever I got the ball in my zone I went for it. I knew Misbah was at the other end. I knew he would stay till the end, it gave me the confidence to go after it. Oh wow wow wow wow what a pitch it was for me to bowl. I just kept it simple, and it worked.”
