WASHINGTON: The fasting month would begin from July 10 in United States of America (USA) as the moon marking the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan was not sighted anywhere in the world on Monday.
Earlier, a statement issued by Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Judicial Council, said that the crescent moon which marks the new lunar month was not sighted on Monday night and that Wednesday (July 10) would as a result be considered the first day of the dawn-to-dusk month of fasting.
Moreover, the moon was also not sighted in Egypt, Syria and Gulf States.
US President Barack Obama has extended his “best wishes” to Muslims celebrating the holy month of Ramadan.
“For the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims, Ramadan is a time for thoughtful reflection, fasting and devotion. It is also an opportunity for family and friends to come together and celebrate the principles that bind people of different faiths — a commitment to peace, justice, equality and compassion towards our fellow human beings,” Obama said in statement. “These bonds are far stronger than the differences that too often drive us apart.”
