SANA’A, Yemen: At least 10 killed including pilot when a Yemeni military plane on a training exercise exploded in mid-air and crashed into a residential area of capital on Monday in the capital city of Yemen, state media said.
According to Yemen’s state media, the Russian-made fighter jet Sukhoi Su-22 was on a training mission when it crashed in Southern Sanaa.
The initial reports said that around three houses and adjacent building caught fire the crash while the firefighters reached the affected site to extinguish the fire.
Several ambulances were seen rushing to the site and security forces have cordoned off the area in southern Sanaa while military experts have started investigating the cause of the incident
An official of Yemen’s Defense Ministry said that the incident was not a part of terrorism as jet was not shot down by anyone and a mechanical fault caused the crash.
An air force source confirmed to 26sep.net that the name of deceased pilot is Captain Hani al-Aghbari, who was killed in the plane crash incident.
Previously, a military fighter jet went down in a residential sector of Sanaa in February, killed at least 10 people and injured 21 while a military cargo plane caught was crashed in the city in last November, killed 10 people.
