ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan defence budget may further soar by 13 percent for the year 2013 which makes over 18 per cent of the country’s overall budget but the government will have to figure out how best to do that.
According to the sources the interim government is considering a 13 pc increase in defence spending which will make it Rs627 billion for the fiscal year 2013-14.
If this increase is confirmed, it would mean that summary that has already been tabled before a meeting of the Priorities Committee will come to life.
Sources said that out of Rs 627 billion, Rs8.8 billion seems to be allocated for defence division while Rs4 billion is suggested for development budget. For the ongoing expenditure of defence production, Rs580.7 million while for development programmes, Rs2.30 billion issuggested.
2.90 billion rupees go to the ongoing expenditures of the housing ministry and Rs3.80 billion is kept for its development projects.
Capital Administration and Development (CAD) ministry expenses will take Rs12.80 billion while Rs920 million is allocated towards its development projects.
It should be mentioned that earlier the plan was to increase the defence budget by Rs 30 billion only when the former federal Minister for Finance and Economic Affairs Saleem H Mandviwalla had announced that the government would have a review for increasing the country’s defence budget by Rs30billion in April for the ongoing financial year, 2012-2013 but now the interim government is considering to increase the budget by 13 pc.
