Apple has a great feature called FaceTime which lets you video calling using WiFi connection through your iPhone, iPod, iPad or even Mac to another person.
But the problem for iPhone or other handheld devices is varying lighting conditions and movement which makes the video quality poor. The varying conditions make the Auto Exposure of the camera a difficult thing and the result is a poor video calling experience to the device owner.
However, it is expected that Apple’s upcoming devices like iPhone 5S, iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 and last but not the least iPhone 6 may have a better quality Auto Exposure method for FaceTime feature.
Apple’s advanced Research and Development team has invented an improved Auto Exposure method which would enable camera to work better even in varying lighting condition and movement.
“Auto exposure (AE) algorithms in handheld and/or mobile videoconferencing applications–unlike their fixed camera counterparts–are often exposed to a wide variety of rapidly changing lighting and scene conditions, and thus face a difficult trade-off between adjusting exposure parameter values too frequently or not frequently enough,” according to the Apple’s research related site PatentlyApple.
Basically the new method of auto exposure from Apple team will enable camera of a iPhone, iPad, iPod or any other handheld device to instantly focus an object even in varying lighting conditions and movement to avoid poor quality video streaming.
If the feature is introduced with iPhone 6 or iPhone 5S, then FaceTime feature can give a high quality video calling option to get connected with your loved ones. But as usual we can only guess when this new technology for FaceTime will be available with Apple’s products.
