Karachi: “Ambassadors of Goodwill” program was organized by CBM Media Management, Public Relations and Corporate Communication students at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) recently.
Pakistanis, who have made Pakistan proud beyond borders relate to education, medicine, engineering, arts, sports, culture, literature, show-biz, business, travel, science and technology etc.
In a packed-to-capacity auditorium of IoBM students, faculty, management, alumni, guests and media were seated 20 humble and noble Pakistanis representing those who have been quietly contributing to the positive image of Pakistan in foreign lands.
While welcoming “ambassadors of goodwill” Mr. Parvez Jamil, Faculty Advisor and guiding spirit for students, said that though celebrities promoting the positive image of Pakistan abroad are important, what is vital is silent celebrities’ vocal role as depicted on this occasion.
Some silent celebrities who project Pakistan in an instrumental way are seldom heard as he cited an example of subdued yet magically skillful children of our sports industry whose work has monopolized the sports market of the world and has become a tremendous foreign exchange earner for Pakistan.
As Mr. Shahid Amin, Pakistan’s Ambassador to several countries, now teaching International Relations at CBM, upheld the need for trend-setting honesty rather than customary craftiness in diplomacy, Dr. Asima Faisal mentioned how she promoted CBM’s Health management program in India and convinced international Health Managers about its standing and reputation to be shared globally.
“Ambassadors of goodwill” included Mr. Zunnoor Ahmed Director, Pak German Business Forum with a Masters in IT and Business Management from Frankfurt University, extra-ordinary fluency in German language, writing once for a German newspaper “Braunschweiger Zeitung”, especially on World Cup Soccer in Germany in 2006, winning the Frankfurt University Squash Championship twice, being so overwhelmed when his name was read as a winner from Pakistan that he could not hold back his tears.
The reason for his return to Pakistan in 1996 was primarily “a will and ambition to serve his people”. While Ms. Yasmin Taha shared how she promoted Daily Jang and Duniya pages for overseas Pakistanis, Ms. Fahim Jaferi shared educational, literary and social experiences in Nigeria, Europe and North America.
Highlighted was Aamir Bhagat, awarded for his documentary on innocent victims of drone attacks at the National Film Festival for the talented youth in Washington DC; Mr. Muhammad Intesar Uddin, Commercial Advisor, Consulate General of the UAE being instrumental towards projecting the positive image of Pakistan in the UAE; Ms. Mina Fatima Rizvi delighting the world with her hand-woven products exported with the tag of “Made in Pakistan”; Ms. Salma Ratani of the AKU Hospital’s Nursing Program, visiting Canada, Singapore and Bangladesh to build crucial linkages in nursing for Pakistan.
Present on this occasion was also Mr. Danial Shah, a travel writer and photographer who travels across Pakistan for positive stories abroad. In 2010, Danial launched the first travel blog of Pakistan www.iExplorePakisan.com and started publishing positive stories of the country online.
He travelled from the coastal line in the south to the high altitude in the middle of mountains in the north. In 2011, he received national award Nishan-e-Azam for contributing to the positive image of Pakistan on the internet.
In December 2011, he received travel blogger of the year award by Google and CIO Pakistan. In 2012, he trekked for 14 days to see the second highest mountain on earth: K2 in the extreme north of Pakistan.
As Mr. Moinul Atiq, Sports psychologist, PCB resolved to draw a strategy in confidence building and positive thinking for our cricketers towards better international credibility, Mr. Jalal uddin, a leading cricket coach and umpire, who holds the record of hat rick on debut in one day internationals, talked about national interest over and above all other considerations.
While Syeda Fahim Iqbal Jaferi informed about how Pakistan’s image is being enhanced through education and literature in North America and in Europe, Mr. Akbar Shahbaz, among pioneers of FM radio broadcasting, who graduated in Mass Communication, Broadcasting and Journalism from Western Illinois University, USA, shared experiences on the positive image of Pakistan abroad.
Projecting positive image of Pakistan abroad with grace and dignity included Faiza Aziz Bhamani volunteering for the UN on Women Empowerment and Youth promotion and Dr. Sikander Iqbal representing Pakistan internationally in health seminars, conferences, events and mega events.
One of the most revealing guests was Mr. Gordon Gormen, a Scottish, General Manager Avari Towers, whose feelings for and social work in Pakistan and his forthcoming book “Five years in Pakistan, Tall tales of hospitality from the frontier of terror” speak volumes of his being Pakistan’s Ambassador of goodwill.
