Islamabad: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Wednesday wrote a letter to the opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan asking him to propose the list of nominees for a care taker Prime Minister.
Addressing Nisar, the premier said, “It is imperative that we initiate the process under Article 224 of the Constitution to arrive at a consensus on the appointment of care taker Prime Minister, who could uphold the national interest and ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.”
Ashraf further said that the people of Pakistan rightly expect us to rise to the occasion and agree upon the most suitable person as care taker Prime Minster and pave the way for holding general elections in an impartial, fair and transparent manner.
“Let us enable the people of Pakistan to express their will in an exemplary environment and ensure smooth transition of power to the next elected government.”
The prime minister further added that he would request Nisar as Leader of the Opposition, to propose names of persons who in his opinion were eminently qualified to be appointed as care taker Prime Minister of Pakistan.
It is to be mentioned here that the article 224(A) of the constitution says: “In case the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing National Assembly do not agree on any person to be appointed as the caretaker Prime Minister, within three days of the dissolution of the National Assembly, they shall forward two nominees each to a Committee to be immediately constituted by the Speaker of the National Assembly, comprising eight members of the outgoing National Assembly, or the Senate, or both, having equal representation from the Treasury and the Opposition, to be nominated by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition respectively.”
