Islamabad: A leadership crisis might be in the offing for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), believed to be the second largest party of Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh, because of the rival factions within the party.
Najam Sethi, co-host of current affairs show “Aapas Ki Baat”, revealed that the MQM might face a political blow before the coming general election in the country.
Sethi was pointing to the uncertain situation created after the MQM left the Pakistan People’s Party-led government and the reports that Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad tendered his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari.
“Altaf Hussain no longer wants to see Ibad as governor while President Zardari thinks that Ibad should continue his tenure if the next governor has to be from the MQM,” Sethi said.
“MQM hardliners also want Ibad to be sacked as they think the governor has been more inclined to the PPP on several occasions.”
The host said, citing a prominent MQM leader, that Altaf was so furious with Ibad that he nominated the names of two PPP members for new governor instead of nominating an MQM member.
Sethi claimed that MQM was divided into factions. “Majority of the party’s leadership is with Altaf Hussain and Farooq Sattar and Ishratul Ibad has support of comparatively lesser number of party members.”
He said that MQM might be facing a leadership crisis in the next 10 to 15 days. And if this happened, Sethi said, the most serious concern would be to stop the MQM from violence to conduct elections peacefully.
Governor Ishratul Ibad is in Dubai these days amid reports that he might have sent his resignation to President Zardari.
Meanwhile, a high-placed source in the Presidency in Islamabad told independent UK news website The News Tribe that the president was against the resignation of Ibad.
