Karachi: Traders and influential personalities in Karachi have started receiving calls from extortionists, associating themselves from People’s Amn Committee (PAC), a few days after removal of cases from PAC leaders.
According to a correspondent of The News Tribe (TNT), the extortionists have killed two businessmen in the last two days after they failed to meet criminals’ demands.
The new thing this time around is that the secret callers are not only demanding money from businessmen, but also from the working class. Moreover, the extortionists now do not hesitate to hide their association with the PAC.
The TNT correspondent reported that the extortionists demanded Rs500,000 from a person—working in an office at one of the busiest commercial areas of Karachi, Shahrah-e-Faisal. The person’s family said the callers threatened to kidnap and kill his son if their demands would not be fulfilled in time.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) left the government on Saturday, protesting against removal of cases of PAC leaders. MQM strongly criticised the decision, saying that “showing leniency to gangsters was not in public interest”.
Karachi police, admitting a significant rise in the number of calls from the extortionists, expressed their surprise that it was the first time when criminals identified themselves on call.
When contacted by TNT, a well-placed PAC source denied any extortion calls from their members. “It was totally irrational that the members bring a bad name to the party by revealing their identities.”
The source said the people who were against the decision might be behind the “childish” act.
