Islamabad: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan ordered district and session judges to submit a report about ghost schools across the country within one month.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Chaudhry was hearing the case about ghost schools.
The court ordered the judges to conduct the survey in broader guidelines and submit detailed report. The bench directed all provincial chief and education secretaries to cooperate with the judges in the investigation process. The bench also asked presidents and secretaries of all district bars to assist the judges in the process.
“Apparently salaries are being disbursed as buildings remain abandoned or occupied by animals. This is what we are doing to our children when education is a constitutional right,” the chief justice said.
He further said that the government failed to provide any answer or details about the state of ghost and non-functional schools. That was not court’s job but we had to enforce fundamental rights entitled in the constitution.
“It is duty of the government to provide free education to its citizens under Article 25-A of the constitution but nothing was done in this regard,” CJ added.
Hearing of the case was adjourned until March 18.
