Islamabad: Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim on Wednesday advised President Asif Ali Zardari to stay away from political gatherings otherwise severe action could be taken against him.
Talking to Express News, the CEC said that the president, prime minister, chief ministers and governors should refrain from attending political activities so that every party could enjoy equal opportunity in the elections.
Remembering his meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, Ibrahim said that the army assured him complete support for the next general election.
“Kayani clearly told to me that don’t take care of what Tahirul Qadri is saying and just conduct elections,” he said.
He further revealed that at first he did not recognized as who was General kayani and after meeting an army official he asked him to convey his best wishes to the army chief. The official turned towards me and said that he was Kayani, the CEC added.
He further expressed concern over the presence of huge cache of weapons in the country and hoped that the new prime minister would announce to free the country from weapons in his first speech after the elections.
