Islamabad: Lt Gen (retd) Shahid Aziz, whose recent book ‘Ye Khamoshi Kaha Tak’ has brought to light certain facts about Kargil War that deserves careful consideration, on Thursday said that the decision of military coup against the Nawaz government had been made much earlier and in this connection the then director general military operations (DGMO) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia was replaced with him.
Speaking in Geo News’ show Capital Talk, Aziz said it was true that Nawaz Sharif wanted to remove Gen Musharraf and he did so later. However, preparations for a military takeover were made before it.
Those who planned the coup were aware that the then DGMO Lt Gen Tauqir Zia would not cooperate in the event of military takeover, therefore, they waited for his promotion as Corps Commander Mangla. Later, I was appointed DGMO because of my family relationship with Musharraf.
He said Gen Musharraf promised us (military) that he did not want to retain power and due to this fact the Supreme Court had endorsed his takeover.
Meanwhile, Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf talking to Dunya TV termed Gen Shahid Aziz as liar, dismissing his allegations.
