Lahore: The Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) spent Rs700 million under “medical treatment for all without discrimination” programme in 2012 for provision of free medical facilities to patients, PIC Chief Executive Prof. Bilal Zakiya Khan told media on Monday.
He said that the institute provided medical treatment to more than 114,000 patients. Nearly 127,000 new patients were registered at the PIC during last one year period, he said.
While giving the details of the services rendered last year, PIC Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr Muhammad Javed told media that around 353,332 patients were benefited by free of cost medicines at outdoor pharmacy.
He said that according to government policy, 23 patients and 53 lawyers were facilitated at hospital on the directives of Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif.
At least 86,688 out of 127,812 patients were treated free of cost during 2012, he said, adding that Echo Cardiography tests of 19024 deserving patients were taken without any penny.
Responding to a question, Bilal rejected the impression that the poor were not treated free of charge at the PIC saying that facts and figures were telling a different story.
