Karachi: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notices to Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and others for their alleged interference in the Karachi’s Baldia factory fire case.
At least 258 people were killed in September in one of the deadliest fires in Pakistan’s history.
Earlier this week, State Minister for Finance Salim Mandviwalla said that the case filed against the owners of the factory was withdrawn on the prime minister’s discretion
A local NGO had submitted a petition in the SHC requesting to take notice of interference by PM Ashraf in the case and has asked the court to declare the interference as illegal.
The petition said that to withdraw a murder case by the PM was against provincial autonomy and thus he acted above the Constitution.
After hearing the petitioner’s arguments, SHC’s Justice Maqbool Baqir issued notices to Ayub Qazi, the Principal Secretary Ashraf, Sindh government, Inspector General of Sindh Police, the factory owners and others to appear in court on Feb 14 and submit their replies.
