Islamabad: Around Rs. 5 billion were embezzled by civil servants during the tenure of current coalition regime led by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the government informed the Senate on Thursday.
Law and Justice Affairs Minister Farooq H Naek, in his written reply to the Upper House of the Parliament, said as many as 643 government workers were held on charges of corruption. “Some Rs1.2 billion have been recovered from them.”
Responding to a question posed by MQM Senator Nasreen Jalil, law minister said criminal proceedings were underway against the corrupt officials in order to effectively recover the looted money from them.
Naek said the charged officials belonged to all provinces including the federal government. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is handling these corruption cases.
159 civil servants have been arrested by NAB in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, 81 in Balochistan, 48 in Punjab and 55 government servants in Sindh on charges of embezzlement, corruption, misappropriation and misuse of authority, he added.
