New Delhi: As Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of Mumbai attack, has been executed and buried in Pune jail, the question of who will bear the cost of his security is being circulated in Indian media and social networking sites.
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) had prepared a bill of over Rs.260 million (Indian rupee), as of 31 August, for providing security cover to Kasab.
Over 200 ITBP personnel had been deployed in and around the jail to protect Kasab since March 2009.
The ITBP contingent at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai will now be “deinducted”.
The force was sent on the request of the state government to guard the high-profile inmate.
The ITBP squad that was deployed for securing Kasab was armed with the best weaponry like under barrel grenade launchers, as well as high precision weapons and ammunition.
According to the Firstpost, the Maharashtra government made it clear that it would not settle the bill and wanted the central government to contribute on the basis that Kasab was a valuable catch for the entire nation and not just Maharashtra.
However the union home ministry had refused to accept the demand, on the basis that the two companies of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were deployed at the prison at the state’s request. Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, had recently said that the dispute was ‘administrative’ and needed to be debated.
