Islamabad: An important meeting of National Judicial Policy-making Committee is underway at Supreme Court of Pakistan which is mulling to appoint judicial officers as returning officers (ROs) in the next general elections.
Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan, Ishtiaq Ahmed is to brief the meeting being led by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Ifitikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, about holding the election in a transparent manner.
Expressing his views on the occasion, the CJP said elections should be held in a free, fair and in accordance with the law. He said that if ECP seeks coordination of any institution, the latter should consider the same. Â He also said that the ECP can make use of wide resources to hold transparent elections.
Justice Iftikhar further said that he has sought some explanation from the EC before making any decision pertaining to the issue. He observed that the judiciary has progressed through many phases in its vociferous struggle for the revival of judicial system.
Earlier, the Election Commission had requested to avail services of judicial officers as ROs at the polling stations in upcoming elections.
The meeting is being attended by the secretaries of Election Commission and Law and Justice Commission while chief justices of all five high courts and Federal Shariah Court are also present on the occasion.
