Islamabad: Young talented students exhibit their debating muscles to knock down their opponents in the First Round of All Pakistan Inter University Debate Contest for Award of Allama Iqbal Shield which was held at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML), Islamabad.
The students like veteran wrestlers employed all those skills and techniques that help them performing well in their arena. Careful selection of words, dramatic rise and fall of voice, native like accents, precise and accurate narrations, realistic themes, exuberant deliverance, though provoking contents and clarity of thoughts and minds were some of techniques used to stand out the competition. Talking to scribe, Abubakar Bhutta, a faculty member, said that “it was admirable demonstration of the art of public speaking and students’ sensitivity towards national and international issues and their vitality, enthusiasm, and patriotism, visible in their art of speech, are features worth appreciating”.
A total of 22 student participants from different departments of the University participated in the English and Urdu categories of debate competition and presented their views with masterly acumen. The rules of the contest require the speech must be completely memorized, no notes allowed, and must be between four to five minutes in length. Ahmed Nawaz of the Mass Communication Department secured the first position and Rs 2500 cash prize, Mirza Atta-ur-Rehman from English Graduate Studies Department secured 2nd position and Rs 1500 cash prize while Khadeeja Atta also from English Graduate Studies Department secured 3rd position and Rs 1000/- cash prize in the category of English Debate contest. Syeda Zoha Fatima from Economics Department, Sajid Niazi from Arabic Department and Naqash Hussain from International Relations Department got the 1st, the 2nd and the 3rd positions and Rs 2500, 1500 and 1000 cash prizes respectively in the Urdu Debate Contest.
Moreover, the top two position holders of the first round will participate in the 2nd Round of Debate Contest at Regional Level which will be held under the supervision of Higher Education Commission. The Rector Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan was the Chief Guest in the debate contest while it was also attended by Director General Brig Azam Jamal, Registar Brig (R) Saeed Akhtar Malik, Director Student Affairs Taj Muhammad, Deans, Heads, faculty members and a great number of students from different department of the university. Speaking at the occasion President English Debating Society Assistant Professor Arshad Mehmood said that “such co-curricular activities are only way to counter the cultural invasion and guide the students towards better knowledge of languages as there is no concept of superior or inferior language in the world”.
“We are grateful to NUML higher authorities and administration for taking special interest for arrangement of such healthy co-curricular activities for the students in the university”, he added. In the end Rector NUML gave away the prizes among the winners and distributed certificates among the participants.
