Colombo: The Twenty20 champion England on Friday defeated the weaker Afghan side by 116 runs in the 6th match of the World Cup played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka, ultimately knocking out Afghanistan from the tournament.
Chasing a huge target of 196 runs, the Afghan team was bowled out at 80 runs by outstanding English bowling. Samiullah Shenwari, who scored 44 runs, was the only Afghan batsman to enter into double figures.
The English bowlers gave no chance to the inexperience Afghan team to stable during any part of the inning. Dernbach, Stuart Broad, Patel and Graeme Swann shared two wickets accompanied by one wicket of Steven Finn.
Earlier, the English batsmen Luke Wright played a blistering inning of 99 runs followed by Hales 31 and Morgan 27. Dawlatzai, who took two wickets, remained the leading bowler for Afghan side.
