Islamabad: The Ministry of Finance has released Rs3.12 billion to Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan as development budget, a report said on Tuesday.
The report published on Pakistan leading English daily ‘The News’ said that the fund would be utilised to facilitate around 10,000 Pakistani scholars studying abroad.
“No funds were issued for Pakistani scholars in international universities since February 2012 and there were rumours that foreign scholarship programme would be stopped if the government fails to release funds in time. The HEC and Pakistani government are bound to release them funding as per deed of agreement signed with them,” the report added.
“The fund of Rs3.12 billion has been released by the Finance Ministry, which will primarily be utilised for foreign scholarship programme,” HEC Media Manager Murtaza Noor confirmed to the paper.
The failure to pay the due payments to Pakistani scholars in international universities was becoming a huge embarrassment for the government. The scarcity of funds also affected the need-based scholarships awarded to the youth belonging to remote areas of Pakistan including Balochistan, Fata, interior Sindh and south Punjab.
