NRO implementation case: SC gives 22 days to PM Ashraf

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Monday gave 22 days time to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to implement the apex court order to write letter to Swiss officials to reopen cases against President Asif Ali Zardari and adjourned the hearing of the NRO implementation case till September 18.

The court has also directed the prime minister to appear in person before a five-judge bench on next hearing.

The five-member bench of the apex court headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa comprises Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Ijaz Afzal Khan, Justice Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Justice Athar Saeed was hearing the case.

During the hearing, Justice Khosa remarked that, “You are a prestigious prime minister of the prestigious nation.”

The PM, standing in the rostrum, said that he was keen to solve the issue, adding that the foreign diplomats always ask questions regarding the issue whenever he meet them.

The premier sought four to six week time to solve the issue saying he want to consult with constitutional experts. He said he was sure that he will find out a way that will also increase the respect of the judiciary.

The bench said that his (PM) governor daily gives contemptuous statement against the judiciary. “It seems that he has no control over the governor.”

The prime minister requested the court to withdraw contempt notice against him as he was going to China on official visit.

The bench said that they have no option but to implement the orders. They asked the PM to make commitment and nominate a person who would write letter to Swiss officials.

Earlier on August 8, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had issued a contempt notice to PM Ashraf for not implementing its order directed him to appear in person before a five-judge bench on August 27 to respond to the notice.
