Washington: Google which is extensively covering the London Olympics 2012 has posted its 11th doodle of the Olympics on its homepage. Dedicated to Javelin Throw, the doodle features a male javelin thrower taking the throwing position in a stadium. The term “Google” is written in a slapdash manner, with the second ‘O’ hidden behind the athlete.
The javelin throw is a track and field athletics throwing event where the object to be thrown is the javelin, a spear approximately 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in) in length. Javelin is an event of both the men’s decathlon and the women’s heptathlon. The javelin thrower gains momentum by running within a predetermined area.
The size, shape, minimum weight, and center of gravity of the javelin implement itself are all defined by IAAF rules. In international competition, men throw a javelin between 2.6 and 2.7 m (8 ft 6 in and 8 ft 10 in) in length and 800 g (28 oz) in weight, and women throw a javelin between 2.2 and 2.3 m (7 ft 3 in and 7 ft 7 in) in length and 600 g (21 oz) in weight. The javelin is equipped with a grip, approximately 150 mm (5.9 in) wide, made of cord and located at the javelin’s center of gravity (0.9 to 1.06 m (2 ft 10 in to 3 ft 6 in) or 0.8 to 0.92 m (2 ft 7 in to 3 ft 0.2 in) from the tip of the javelin for men’s and women’s implements, respectively).
Using a run-up the athlete must release the javelin before the end of the runway, launching it with one hand held over the shoulder. The distance the javelin travels is measured from the end of the runway to the point the javelin first touches the ground, which must be within the lines of the throwing sector. The javelin must land on its tip for the throw to be valid.
