London: Canada won its first medal of the 2012 London Olympics with Divers Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel claiming bronze in the women’s 3m springboard event.
Heymans, 30, becomes the first female diver to reach the podium in four consecutive Olympic Games.
In 2000, she won silver in the 10-metre synchro; in 2004, bronze in the same event in Athens; and in 2008, a silver in the 10-metre individual event.
Both divers finished with 316.8 points and the bronze after losing their composure on their second dive in the today’s event.
They won silver in the event at last year’s world championships.
Meanwhile, Chinese Wu Minxia and He Zi won the first gold medal of the 2012 London Olympics women’s synchronised 3m springboard event, scoring 346.20 points.
The US and Italy claimed the silver and bronze, respectively.
In 2004, Heymans and partner Blythe Hartley’s bronze was the lone medal in the opening seven days.
Canada finished with 18 medals in Beijing and a dozen in Athens.
