London: The diving events at 2012 London Olympics are scheduled from July 29 to August 11. There are four men’s and four women’s events—3m springboard, 10m platform, synchronised 3m springboard and synchronised 10m platform.
A total of 136 competitors are participating, including 68 men and 68 women.
Below are some of the facts and figures that may help you peep into the history of the game:
- Diving made its Olympic debut in 1904. It was known as “fancy diving”.
- Diving requires acrobatic excellence and supreme coordination skills.
- The pool must be at least five-metre deep.
- For platform, the board must be at least six-metre long and two-metre wide, with a non-slip surface.
- Springboard must be at least 4.8-metre long and a half-metre wide, with a non-slip surface.
- In 1908 Summer Olympics, men’s springboard diving was added.
- Women’s diving debut was in 1912 Summer Olympics.
- Diving, along with swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo are governed by the FINA.
- Greg Louganis is considered to be the greatest diver ever.
- 10. Â The United States has acquired the most number of medals ever with a total of 131 (Gold, 48; Silver, 41; and Bronze, 42).
