London: As the London 2012 Diving event will start on the 29th of July 2012 (Sunday), Google is also marking the day with its third consecutive doodle of the Olympics on its homepages across the world.
On Sunday, the Diving event includes Men’s 3m Springboard, Men’s 10m Platform, Men’s 3m Springboard, Men’s Synchronized 3m Springboard, Men’s Synchronized 10m Platform, Women’s 3m Springboard, Women’s 10m Platform, Women’s Synchronized 3m Springboard and Women’s Synchronized 10m Platform
Diving was first introduced in the official program of the Summer Olympic Games at the 1904 Games of St. Louis and has been an Olympic sport since. It was known as “fancy diving” for the acrobatic stunts performed by divers during the dive (such as somersaults and twists).
Diving requires acrobatic excellence and supreme coordination skills, as athletes dive from heights of up to 10m into the waters below.
Who are favourites?
China are the favourite for the event and they will bid to go one better than four years ago and scoop all the medals in the Olympic diving pool over the next fortnight.
In Beijing only Matthew Mitcham denied them a home clean sweep after the Australian upset the odds to win in the men’s 10 metre platform.
