Kabul: A gunman wearing an Afghan military dress turned his weapon against foreign trainers working for NATO in the western province of Herat on Sunday, killing three, ultimately increasing the death toll of Nato soldiers to eight in 24 hours.
The latest incident occurred at a regional training center in the relatively peaceful western province near Afghanistan’s border with Iran, which is normally patrolled by Italian forces.
A spokesman for the NATO-led coalition confirmed the incident and said “An individual wearing an Afghan National Security Force uniform turned his weapon against ISAF contracted civilian employees in western Afghanistan today, killing three,”, adding that an unknown number of other people had been wounded.
“Also, one insurgent was killed in the engagement and we are still looking for one more shooter,” he said.
Earlier, At least four Nato soldiers were killed in separate attacks in eastern Afghanistan at the weekend.
According to a count based on the website icasualties.org, the latest deaths take the total toll among the US-led coalition so far this year to 254.
