Karachi: Among 21 national athletes to participate in the upcoming mega event ‘Olympics’, Rabia ashiq is the one who is yet to represent the country first time in London Olympics 2012.
A 20-year-old, is a long distance runner and will be participating in 800m race in London Olympics. In order to give her best performance in the mega event, Ashiq has practiced with men for 3 months.
“I have practiced racing with men on the advice of my coach Bushra Perveen, to better work on my speed”, Rabiya told The News Tribe.
As now Rabiya has given her personal best of 2:10:65 in Thailand’s Asian Championship, however, the national record of 800m stands at 2:08:04, which has been secured by her coach Bushra Perveen.
When Asked about her goal, she said, she obviously wanted to break the international record of 2:01:00 like that of every athlete, but if not on international level then at least she wanted to set a new national record.
“I want to run up to 2:06:00 or 2:04:00 at the olympics because I wish to break my coach’s record”, she said.
According to her, “I am not feeling nervousness with the departure nearing by each passing day as my biggest dream is near to completion and I want to feel the pleasure of holding national flag while standing on the victory stand”, she added.
She showed some sort of despair as no one has not come forward to sponsor athletes who are going to represent Pakistan. When asked about the expenses of ticketing and sponsorship of kits she said, Our federation provide all these things to us.
